random Japanese "festival"

So yesterday we went out with a friend looking for bicycles to get us around post and out in town a bit.  We went to a nearby town Machida and came home bike-less but it was a great day none the less.  The hubs did try out a unicycle

He can't really ride a unicycle, but he was able to get up there long enough for me to take a photo =)

We went to lunch at "the next place we see that has pictures in the window"...yeah, my restaurants choosing abilities are the best!  We sit down and start looking at the picture menu (thank God for those things!) and a waitress walks up and starts talking to us in Japanese.  Me, being the genius that I am, assumed she was asking us if we want something to drink so I say "mizu" for water.  She looks at me funny and walks away and the boys (my husband and our new friend Andrew) start laughing hysterically...apparently she asked if we speak Japanese...oops!  I guess she got her answer =)  I'm never going to hear the end of that one but at least I'm trying...right?!?!

After lunch, we saw a lot of people walking around in robe like clothing and about 30 minutes late we hear chanting up ahead so we hurry up the road and find this

I have no idea what was actually going on, but we followed the crowd down the street and found that it ended at a festival of sorts
 with lots of interesting foods

and performances
and prayers hanging outside a temple (at least I THINK that's what they are)

We didn't come home with bikes, but I'm so glad we went out looking and found this celebration!

  1. Great pictures!! I have only been through Machida once, I hear they have a shrine sale every month that is supposed to be pretty cool. I haven't always been lucky on the food front- glad you are!! :-)
Oh- those are prayer boards, you can buy one and write your own wish/prayer on them- and then hang it up for others to read, lol.

  2. How cool!! And yeah, I would probably do the same thing - just stick to the words I know. I made sure to learn "Slower please, I only speak a little Spanish." :) Which will probably come in handy in El Paso!
